Galle
Old streets, small cafes and walks along the fort walls.
Inside Galle Fort, the best way to explore is on foot. Narrow streets lead past old houses, shops, cafes and places of worship. Some corners are busy with visitors, while others are quiet enough to hear daily life behind the doors and garden walls.
Walk out onto the ramparts for sea views, then follow the streets towards the lighthouse. Look at the shaded verandas, heavy doors and worn stonework along the way. You do not need a long list of stops here; much of the pleasure is in walking slowly and finding somewhere to sit.
The rampart photo gives an idea of the broad walls and paths beside the sea. There are open stretches with little shade, so you may prefer to walk them when the day feels cooler. Return to the streets for a drink or a break when you need one.
The evening street photo shows another reason to leave some time after your walk. Shops and places to eat give you somewhere to sit as the light changes. You can enjoy the coastal views first, then spend the rest of the visit exploring a few lanes at your own pace.
Bring water for the warmer parts of the day and take care near the edges of the walls. A visit to the fort can be paired with beach time in nearby Unawatuna, or enjoyed on its own over a leisurely afternoon.
