Unawatuna

A sandy south-coast bay close to Galle Fort.

Unawatuna is a beach village near Galle, with places to stay and eat close to the sand. It is easy to spend a day moving between the shade, the shore and a small restaurant. You can make plans, but you do not need many to enjoy being here.

The main bay is the centre of a stay, with palms and coastal views around it. For a change of scene, head to Galle Fort to walk the old streets and ramparts. The two places work well together: a little history and town life, followed by time back at the beach.

The view from above shows the curve of the shore and the green headland around the bay. On foot, you can enjoy a smaller part of it at a time, moving between the beach and places to eat. Choose a spot with shade if you plan to stay out for several hours.

The snorkelling and evening beach photos suggest two very different ways to spend your time. Ask about a guided water outing when conditions allow, then leave the evening free for a meal near the shore. There is no need to fit both into the same day.

Ask locally before swimming, since sea conditions can change. Leave space in your trip for a quiet morning or an extra beach walk. Unawatuna works particularly well when you want to rest after travelling through the hills or visiting ancient cities.
