Yala National Park
Jeep safaris through woodland, waterholes and leopard habitat.
A visit to Yala means heading into the park by jeep and seeing what the day brings. The tracks pass through dry woodland, open ground and areas near water. Some stretches may be quiet, while others give you a chance to stop and watch animals going about their day.
Leopards are the sighting many visitors hope for. Elephants, deer, crocodiles and birds are also part of the park, and they deserve time too. Watching an elephant feed or birds gather at a waterhole can be a memorable part of the drive.
The photos show why it is worth watching more than one kind of animal. A calf staying close to adult elephants, deer feeding together and a bear moving through the trees all give you different things to notice. Let the animals set the pace of each stop.
Keep your camera ready, but spend some time looking without it too. Animals may be partly hidden by leaves or farther from the track than in a photograph. A quiet wait and a pair of binoculars can help you enjoy those less obvious sightings.
There is no set route that guarantees a particular animal. Let your guide read the conditions and keep your expectations open. Stay quiet near wildlife, follow park rules and give animals space. Binoculars are useful for watching without getting too close.
