Colombo

Colombo is busy, noisy and full of everyday life. Shops spill into market streets, office buildings rise above older neighbourhoods, and the ocean is never far away. It is worth leaving time to see a little of the city before heading inland or flying home.

Pettah is a good place to see the trading side of Colombo, with crowded lanes and shops selling all kinds of goods. Galle Face Green offers a more open setting beside the sea. Temples and older buildings around the city show the different communities that have made their homes here.

The city photos show the contrast between the seafront, older buildings and tall modern towers. Around Galle Face, there is space to look along the coastline and watch people spending time outdoors. It is a useful change of pace after the crowded streets farther inland.

The Lotus Tower stands out in the wider city view. If you want to visit it as well as markets or religious sites, group your stops by area and check access before leaving. A few well-chosen places, with a meal between them, make a more comfortable city day.

Pick a few stops rather than trying to see everything. Traffic can make short distances take longer than expected. Walk where it makes sense, pause for something to eat and let the city be part of the holiday rather than just a place to pass through.
