DISCOVER SRI LANKA

Horton Plains

A long highland walk through grassland, forest and mist.

Horton Plains feels different from the warmer parts of Sri Lanka. Open grassland meets patches of forest, and the air can be cool and damp. The main activity is walking, so come prepared to spend time outdoors rather than move between stops by car.

The route takes in World's End and Baker's Falls. Clear weather brings wide views from the cliffs, but mist can cover them completely. Along the rest of the path, look at the changing plants, streams and open plains. There is more to the walk than reaching the main viewpoint.

The landscape and waterfall photos show the variety you can enjoy during a walking day. The open views feel very different from the shaded stretches near water. Allow time for both, rather than treating the whole walk as a race to the cliffs.

The wildlife photo is a reminder to keep looking around, though a photograph is no promise of a sighting. Most of your visit will be about the path, plants and views. Carry what you need for the walk and keep food packed away while watching any animals you come across.

Bring a warm layer, rain protection and shoes suited to uneven ground. Think about the walking distance when planning for your group. Stay on marked paths, keep well back from cliff edges and carry all rubbish out with you.
