DISCOVER SRI LANKA

Kumana National Park

Birdwatching and jeep safaris through wetlands, lagoons and forest.

Kumana National Park is in southeastern Sri Lanka, near the coast south of Arugam Bay. It is known for its birdlife and wetland scenery. A visit takes you away from the beach towns and into a landscape of lagoons, waterholes and forest.

Explore by jeep with a guide and take time to watch the birds around the water. You may also see other wildlife along the tracks. The birds and animals you find depend on the season, water levels and the day itself, so there is no fixed list of sightings.

The bird photos show the difference between watching a group in shallow water and spotting a single bird on a branch. Both reward a little patience. Look for movement along the waterline, then check the nearby trees while your guide watches the wider area.

The deer photo adds another part of the park visit. Although birds are a main reason to come, leave time for the animals and scenery along the way. Keep binoculars within reach and use quiet stops to look around before asking to move on.

Bring binoculars if you have them, along with water and sun protection. Keep noise low and follow your guide and the park rules. Kumana can be included in a stay around Arugam Bay if you would like a day in nature between beach days.
